Concerning good resolutions
A good examination of self at the end of each day in prayer, or first day of every month etc. helps one to be reminded of the good resolutions taken. The imagery of the clock is best used as an example. The clock needs to be wound up at regular intervals as well as cleanse away the rust which clogs it with periodic servicing, makes the clock run well. The human soul too needs such servicing. Our heart is prone to many fallings and risings due to our vulnerable human nature. Just as the clock needs careful oiling, the human mechanism needs to be invigorated and renewed through the sacraments, especially through the sacrament of confession. (Ch. 1).A good examination of self or in another term, an over view of life is expedient, if one seeks after spiritual perfection. It pauses on us many questions and detects where, how or to what our heart is most inclined to. Sincerity of purpose and transparency is a pre- requisite to a good examination of self (Ch.2).
Concerning the end of life
Chapter 18 speaks of the vision of the end. Death is inevitable whether one likes it or not. All our earnings and longings of the whole life will meet its end at the portals of death one day. No doubt, the devotions, good resolutions, good practices, virtues and good works will gain us eternal life and sustain us to the end. Therefore, life on this terrain has to be a constant look towards Christ. With Him before us all hurdles will give way and we will safely land on the shore. The Introduction to the devout life is a universal call to all people of good will, to be loyal, consistent and faithful and above all be devoted in our relationship of love to the God of love. Consider that the whole universe needs to be loved in God, we are the instruments in God’s hand- our focal point is Christ alone.
